'A Directory of Herbs in New Zealand'   

 'A History Lesson' about the creation of herb societies in this country.

     In the spring of 1962, a modest sixteen-page cyclostyled newsletter called 'The Herb' was produced by Robert Beasley, founder president of the Herb Lovers Club. Its aim was to 'encourage mutual interest in the growing and use of herbs' and although the club never met, the annual subscription of 6 shillings enabled members to share information on all aspects of herbs through the mail.

     From this grew the regional Herb Societies, Canterbury in 1968, then Auckland in 1970, being the pioneers. By 1979 when the first Dittany (the annual journal of the New Zealand Herb Societies) appeared, fourteen herb societies were listed.  In 1984 Dittany 5 listed thirty-four and in this publication are listed forty-three, some of which are now members of the Herb Federation of New Zealand.
